“I’d like to see a Chevy SS”

“An Impala SS?”

“Not exactly, it’s just an SS. I’m wanting to write an article about one so I’d like to check it out if possible.”

“Let me talk to my manager.... ....we have one on our used lot, want to check it out?”

It’s a last gen Impala SS.

Fortunately a different salesperson had one, and started it up and let me look at it. The sound is heavenly.

Apparently they’ll call me when they get one in. The salesperson was disappointed when he asked if I would be paying in cash. Dude, I made it clear that I wouldn’t be purchasing it much less “60k” in cash. I must have looked like the rich kind of disheveled today.

$60k for an SS? What the shit?

I’m wanting to write an article about one so I’d like to check it out if possible.

Well there’s your problem. Car salesmen are paid to sell cars. They are not paid to give cars to aspiring automotive journalists for free. Find a local owner, you’re post would probably be better with his/her perspective anyway.

Sounds like a nice salesman was happy to show off his car to a guy with no interest in buying from the dealer. That’s a small win.

Still a shame they didn’t have one around. I’m sure they had about a dozen Vettes, though.

I didn’t bother correcting the poor guy. I am fairly sure he didn’t even know the SS existed before I came in.

Nope just a quick note on an experience. I want the actual article to be a serious effort.

Cool! I’m going to look at a Camaro SS later tonight.

I mean, he makes a good point and isn’t really being rude in any way. He’s even making suggestions to help.

I just priced out every option (I think) on the configurator and it came to $53k. Mostly decals and cosmetic stuff, but that’s right around $60k with TTL.

I did learn a couple of things, though:

1) The SS is available in some truly awful colors. Hopefully they look better in person... but at least they don’t charge extra for them.

2) You can order your car with Holden badges. Interesting.

Very true, although I ran into one of the few local owners doing this.

I don’t feel guilty about this since I was clear about my intentions and why I was there. I would’ve been completely understanding if he had replied with something along the lines of “I ain’t got time for this shit.”

They look good, loving the tri-stripe badge they brought back.

Nope. He’s right, wasn’t harsh and offered a good suggestion.

So...you’re angry that he tried to do his job of selling you a car, when you explicitly went to the dealer and told them you didn’t want to buy a car.

But if the guy had been a dick to you, you would have been more ok with it?

I thought so. It was just slightly frustrating dealing with a non-enthusiast salesperson.

What do you mean you don’t know it’s an imported Holden?

Just very mildly frustrated. If I would have been purchasing today I’d be upset since it was clear that he wasn’t listening to anything I had said. But it's seriously no skin off my nose I was honestly appreciative of the time they took.

I meant in the original post. The reply made it unclear, I guess. jbh’s post made my main point.

I’ve been told that appearances have little to do with wealth these days when attempting to guess someone’s potential.

My dealer just straight up said, “No.”

And when I asked if they ever have or every will have one, again, “No.”

Said it wasn’t high volume enough to worth taking up space. Asked if I wanted an Impala or a Malibu. When I asked him what either of those have to do with an SS he just looked confused like it was a trick question. Bah.

Mine is a high volume dealer in a small region and they've only sold a handful over the past 3 years. The sound sold me. Just need about 45k more...

Ugh. I’m getting ready to go back into the new car market in the next month or so, and just thinking about dealing with salespeople is enough to make me want to maybe put it off for a few more months or years, instead.

Its 2016 now, why the hell can't we arrange the whole thing online and just show up at the dealer to drop off our trade and pick up the new car, without having to talk to anyone?

Last summer I walked in to a Chrysler/Fiat branch of a dealership I used to work for, where they had three different flavors of Dodge Viper, in three colors in the showroom. The Sales manager sorta recognized me but not really...I remembered him as part of a grab assy boys club.

Anyway he nor his sales team did not know the first goddamn thing about them, other than that apparently they were all spoken for... even though I still see them sitting in the same place to this day so he probably just didn’t want a non rich, non interested looking dude leering over them.

Still, I couldhave asked him how do I open the fucking door and he wouldhave given me an inept wide eyed wiggle of his double chin.

It's surprising how much product knowledge sales people usually don't have. I guess it's just not very important. It's definitely a skill I don't possess.

Truth, and I really should not have been surprised as the best sales weapon nowadays is having a good finance game, especially for that branch. Though many dealerships separate the sales and finance guys, ours was one where the two are combined.

Its just mildly infuriating because it flies in the face of most everything I was taught in my marketing schooling and at our Audi/VW/Volvo branch. If a thing is sitting in your showroom and you have the ability, nay responsibility to sell that thing, cheap or expensive, it is your responsibility and should be a point of pride in doing your fffucking job to know most everything about it or answer most every question posed to you. I believe this should go doubly for halo cars but that’s just my unpopular opinion where I found it helps to get people excited about what they could be driving home.
